Leathermen from around the world are heading to our area: this Friday, November 28th, is the third annual Leather Masked Ball, to be held at Purgatory nightclub, 1000 W. St. Road 84, Ft. Lauderdale, from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Though just three years old, the Leather Masked Ball has become one of the most anticipated leather events of the year.

The Ball is a benefit which thus far has raised over $30,000 for charity.  Each year, one-half of the money collected goes to The Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago, and the other half is donated to a local South Florida charity, which this year will be Tuesday’s Angels.

“Each year we talk to different organizations in the vicinity and we look at the services they provide to the community. We bring a couple of the organizations to the board for discussion, and then we decide within the board as to which organization to support for the current year. Local charities are recognized for leadership in their areas of service,“ said Bill Hoeppner, President of the Bound South, the organization which conducts the Leather Masked Ball each year.  Also on the board is long time community business leader and leather man, Eric Lawrence and his partner, famed erotic leather artist, Ira C. Smith.

In the first year, Care Resource received $14,000, and last year the Stonewall Library and Archives received $16,000.  This year the Leather Masked Ball hopes to raise $20,000 for Tuesday’s Angels.

The organization which puts together the Leather Masked Ball is entirely voluntary and, in addition to the sponsors, the board throws smaller fundraisers every year to finance the Ball.

“Every penny that’s raised from ticket sales and for the silent auction goes towards our beneficiaries,” said Bill. “This year we’ve had some really amazing sponsors which helped us put the Ball together.”

There are both general admission and VIP tickets available for the Ball. Advance discount tickets are $35 for VIP, $25 general admission and can be purchased online at www.boundsouth.com by 4:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Tickets will also be available at the door at $45 VIP and $35 general admission.

The headline deejay for the Leather Masked Ball is Sin Morera just returning from the Black and Blue Ball in Montreal, Canada.  Sin has a huge following in New York’s music scene as a deejay/remixer/producer and is well-known from coast-to-coast. Opening for Sin will be D.J. Robbie Leslie who was a fixture in the Fire Island/Studio 54 scene and has been living in this area for many years now providing his deejaying skills at some of our best local clubs.  In the VIP Lounge, D.J. Jeffrey Jacobs will be spinning also.

Special guest entertainer, Cyon Flare, who has been a long-time supporter of the leather community, will provide additional entertainment in the VIP Lounge.  He will be performing his hit single, “Everybody, Everybody”.  There will also be erotic demonstrations on the Main Stage.

The requested attire for the evening is leather/fetish but, despite the name of the event, masks are not required.

Fort Lauderdale has one of the largest and most active leather communities in the country. Year after year, many of the international leather awards and titles have been brought back home here from leathermen who hail from our area. Over the years, leather organizations, such as Bound South, have made a major impact on our entire community.
