Welcome to another edition of South Florida Blade.  In the coming week we welcome thousands of guests to our corner of the globe: this weekend is Thanksgiving, which means in South Florida, it’s time for the White Party.  Come one, come all.

The White Party is a major fundraiser for Care Resource, the largest HIV/AIDS organization in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area.  Most of the party revelers are local regulars, but the event draws visitors.  For those who may be new to the area, we here at the Blade have compiled our “insider’s guide” to navigating the wilds of South Beach. The White Party events will keep you busy; you won’t have time for everything.  But this is a good guide in general, should you ever come back.  Here we go:

•  Don't rent a car.  You don't need it.

•  Take cabs.  They are stupid-overpriced but still better than trying to find parking.

•  If you are nutty enough to drive your car, there are numerous parking garages on 17th Street.  Park for the day and be done with it.  There is also a pay lot on 17th and Washington, which is actually cheaper.

•  Cuban food is not Mexican food.  They have nothing to do with each other.  Cuban food usually consists of piles of rice, beans, and some sort of shredded meat product, piled unceremoniously on a plate.  You are going to be very disappointed if you go to a Cuban restaurant and expect to enchiladas and salsa.

•  Still want Latin food?  Try some empanadas, delicious little pastries filled with zesty meat/cheese/veggies.  The consensus in our office: the best are at Charlotte Bakery, 1497 Washington Ave.

•  Don't go to Mansion.

•  Don't pose for pictures while standing outside of Miami Ink.

•  Don't pose for pictures on the steps of the Versace mansion, where Gianni Versace was shot.  Please.

•  For the love of God, do not get your coffee at Starbucks.  You are in the Latin culture capital of America!  Try cafe con leche.  They are half the price of a Frappucino, not to mention half the calories, and they are extremely delicioso: made with Cuban coffee, steamed milk, and sugar.  You can buy them anywhere, from the best restaurants to dumpy little windows adjacent to convenience stores; my personal favorite is a dirty little market on Lincoln Road, east of Washington, next door to Set (320 Lincoln Rd.).  There is a sign outside that says "Sobe Munchies" or something of the sort, and I could never find an exact address. Doesn't matter.  Go inside, skip the terrifying steamer trays of chicken parts, and buy a cup of deliciousness.  Cost is $2, if you let them keep the change.  PS: Van Dyke on Lincoln Road also has a good cafe con leche, and it's nice to sit and sip.

•  If a Lincoln Road restaurant has a hostess standing outside, waving menus in your face and telling you to come in, "we have a nice menu," etc., do NOT eat there.

•  Don't give your credit card to your server before you get a good look at the check.  Many restaurants add an 18% tip onto the bill.  Then once you pay, they take away the check and bring back just the credit card receipt for you to sign, in the hopes you'll forget and write in another tip.  Sneaky.

•  Service is horrible everywhere.  It’s not  just you, it’s really that bad.

•  There are four gay bars in South Beach: listed alphabetically, they are Halo, The Palace, Score, and Twist.  There are also other gay-oriented promoted nights at clubs around town.  For information on what goes on and when, find a 411 Magazine.  They are in all four of these bars I just listed.  Very convenient. hmm?

•  Breakfast: Balan’s, 1022 Lincoln Road.

•  “Circuit parties” can, ahem, dehydrate a person.  And sometimes you may not want solid food due to, ahem, the substances you've consumed the night before.  So for smoothies: if you have the wherewithal to walk a few blocks off the beaten path, head to Apple a Day Natural Food Market.  Cheaper (about $4!), better ingredients than the chains, it's all organic, and you can tell them to put whatever you want in there.  1834 Alton Rd.

•  If you do want a real meal, and you want it cheap: it’s time ...
