With a unanimous vote, Broward County Commissioners approved a resolution at its Aug. 26 meeting to oppose Amendment 2, the constitutional measure that will do away with domestic partnerships and recognizes marriage as only being between one man and one woman.
Openly gay commissioner Ken Keechl said the resolution is nothing more than symbolic, but he said it sends a strong message for equality.
“It’s a statement by a progressive board that we don’t believe in divisive issues,” Keechl said. “We are going to take a stand.”
The Broward County Commissioners board has been proactive in supporting gay rights in the past. In February, the commissioners approved extending the county human rights ordinance to include gender identity and expression along with sexual orientation. In January 1999, the Commission voted to create a Domestic Partnership Registry for unmarried couples in Broward County, including same-sex couples. This registry was created over nine years before the D.P. registry in Miami-Dade, which was not created until 2008.
